Friends of the Metolius is a Camp Sherman-based conservation nonprofit protecting the natural resources and legacy of the Metolius Basin, with its unique water, forests, and wildlife. It monitors water quality and stream health, advocates for the basin, works with the U.S. Forest Service and Camp Sherman Historical Society to restore historic structures, and offers summer interpretive walks.

Rawley Project, The

The Rawley Project is a Bend dog rescue that finds homes for abandoned dogs and provides temporary refuge for the pets of people in crisis who don't want to surrender them, and runs FIXBend, which offers low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to reduce pet overpopulation.

Sunriver Women's Club

also known as SRWC

All-volunteer community service club welcoming women from Sunriver, La Pine, Bend, and beyond, combining social connection with serious philanthropy. Its community grants, $92,000 to 14 nonprofits this year, focus on south Deschutes County needs: child abuse prevention, education and youth, hunger, health, and safe housing. Its 2026 Power of Giving: End Hunger campaign raised nearly $60,000, beating its goal by half.

ClearPath Healthcare, formerly Hospice of Redmond, is a local nonprofit that has cared for Central Oregon families since 1979. Now serving much of Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson Counties, it provides hospice care, in-home primary care for homebound seniors, and free Transitions support for people facing serious illness, plus grief support open to anyone in the community, special care for veterans, and the Pet Peace of Mind program that cares for patients' pets.

Trained hospice volunteers are part of the care team: offering companionship and respite so family caregivers can rest, sitting vigil, supporting veterans through We Honor Veterans, and helping with grief support. Others help with the Pet Peace of Mind program, community events like the Festival of Trees and Light Up a Life, Camp Sunrise for grieving kids, and office work. No medical background is needed; training is provided.

The Oregon High Desert Grotto is Central Oregon's caving club, a Bend-based chapter of the National Speleological Society founded in 1989. Its members explore, survey, map, and photograph the region's lava tubes and caves, and work to protect these fragile underground ecosystems through cave cleanups, graffiti removal, and responsible-caving education, earning a USDA Forest Service Partnership Award along the way.

Bend nonprofit walking alongside women rebuilding their lives after homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Partnering with Abi's House, New Priorities, Deschutes County Parole & Probation, and other local programs, it teaches life skills in personal finance, health, communication, and careers, with SMART goal coaching that continues after women graduate. Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) develops, protects, and enhances the Central Oregon mountain bike experience through trail stewardship, advocacy, collaboration, and education. Working with the Forest Service, BLM, and other land managers, this largely volunteer-powered nonprofit stewards nearly 600 miles of singletrack, five bike parks, and groomed winter fat bike trails across a region roughly 100 miles north to south and east to west, with local chapters and a goal of putting every Central Oregonian within 20 minutes of a trail.

COTA volunteers logged more than 20,000 hours last year building and maintaining trails across a region roughly 100 miles on each side. Join a trail work day with no experience needed, train as a volunteer crew leader, earn USDA national sawyer certification through COTA's saw program to clear downed trees, help groom winter fat bike trails, or get involved with a local chapter. Businesses and community groups can book their own trail work events.

Youth Choir of Central Oregon has been developing young voices for more than 30 years. Its choirs for boys and girls are organized by age and ability, from beginner sessions for the youngest singers to auditioned choirs for grades 5 through 12, with a strong focus on vocal technique. Singers perform concerts each season and tour in-state, nationally, and internationally.

Sisters Transportation and Ride Share (STARS) provides free, curb-to-curb rides to non-emergency medical appointments for Sisters Country residents who can't drive themselves, including doctor, dental, lab, and physical therapy visits in Sisters, Bend, and Redmond. Launched in 2020 as an Age Friendly Sisters Country Action Team, STARS became an independent all-volunteer nonprofit in 2024 and provided 832 round-trip rides in 2025.

Volunteering looks like

Volunteer drivers use their own cars to take neighbors to medical appointments, picking up rides that fit their schedule on weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm; STARS provides training and the rides go to Sisters, Bend, and Redmond. Volunteer dispatchers take ride requests by phone and match passengers with drivers, and Spanish-speaking dispatchers are especially welcome.
