Volunteer opportunities in Central Oregon
Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP)
also known as CWOP
About Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP)
A public-private partnership in which private citizens and ham radio operators share live data from their own personal weather stations. The data is quality-checked by NOAA's Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) and used by the National Weather Service, emergency managers, wildland firefighters, and universities. In Central Oregon, it's one of the citizen science programs promoted by the National Weather Service office in Pendleton.
Volunteering looks like
Citizen science from home for people with a personal weather station: registering the station and sharing its readings automatically over the internet, with feedback to help improve data quality. Needs a well-sited station, an internet connection, and free or low-cost software. Ham radio operators register with their call sign.
