Volunteer opportunities in Central Oregon

Discover Your Northwest

also known as Discover Your Forest

About Discover Your Northwest

Discover Your Northwest is the nonprofit partner of the Northwest's public lands, and in Central Oregon it is the longtime stewardship partner of the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests and Crooked River National Grassland. Known locally for years as Discover Your Forest, a name it retired on January 1, 2026, it runs volunteer ranger and stewardship programs, youth and family education, interpretive programs, and events like Stars Over Newberry, the Campout for Public Lands, and the Backcountry Film Festival.

Volunteering looks like

Volunteers care for and share Central Oregon's national forests and grassland: Volunteer Rangers and Forest Stewards give interpretive talks, lead guided hikes and snowshoe tours, and staff visitor sites like Lava Lands and Newberry, while others maintain trails, serve at wilderness trailheads, pick up trash, and remove invasive plants. Uniforms and training are provided, and groups can join stewardship projects.
