About Trail Keepers of Oregon
Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) is a statewide, volunteer-powered nonprofit that protects and enhances the Oregon hiking experience through trail building and maintenance, advocacy, outreach, and education. Started in 2007 by hikers who reopened an abandoned trail on Mount Hood, it now has thousands of members, runs the Oregonhikers.org field guide, and counts Central Oregon as a growing focus area, with ongoing stewardship at Smith Rock State Park.
Volunteering looks like
In Central Oregon, TKO volunteers care for the trails at Smith Rock State Park, including the River Trail, Canyon Trail, and the Crooked River footbridge area, at regular Trail Parties, and help at the annual Smith Rock Spring Thing, which draws 200+ volunteers. No experience is needed; tools and training are provided, and TKO offers free chainsaw and crosscut saw certification. Other roles include Trail Ambassadors at trailheads and committee work.
