About Deschutes County Search and Rescue Foundation
The Deschutes County Search and Rescue Foundation supports the Sheriff's Office's all-volunteer Search and Rescue team, which finds and rescues people in the county's mountains, rivers, forests, and high desert year-round, funding equipment, training, and specialized units from swiftwater and mountain rescue to canine and winter operations.
Volunteering looks like
Volunteers complete a roughly 100-hour SAR Academy (21+, background check, oral interview) then respond to search and rescue missions, with specialties in swiftwater, mountain rescue, canine, medical, and winter/avalanche operations. Recruiting typically happens each November.
