Volunteer opportunities in Central Oregon
CoCoRaHS
also known as Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network
About CoCoRaHS
A volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages who measure and report daily rain, hail, and snow. Started in 1998 at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University, it is sponsored by NOAA, the National Weather Service, and the National Science Foundation. Observations feed weather forecasting, drought and flood monitoring, and climate research. In Central Oregon, the network is coordinated through the National Weather Service office in Pendleton, and Oregon's state coordinator is at Oregon State University.
Volunteering looks like
Citizen science from home: measuring daily precipitation, snow, and hail with a standard 4-inch rain gauge and reporting it online or in the mobile app, about five minutes a day. Free online training is provided; observers buy their own official gauge (roughly $40–45). Open to all ages, including families, students, and classrooms.
